Seaphony - Life on Planet Ocean.
In May 2022, Seaphony, an immersive ambisonic sound and light installation, opened in Berlin. My friends at Oceans21 asked me to produce a series of documentaries about the exhibition. I was fascinated by the subject and the opportunity to conceive, shoot, edit and post-produce the three films myself.
The installation took the visitors on a journey to the seabed to discover the sounds of the underwater world. An experience that is still largely unknown to us humans and that impressed me deeply. Theresa Baumgartner's light installation was not only a great place to experiment with my camera, it also invited me to transform the almost unreal world into unusually poetic images.
Ina Krüger, who was responsible for the idea and the overall concept, gave me a deep insight into the philosophy of the installation and their motivation. Together with her partner at Oceans 21, Diana Schniedermeier the goal was, to inspire people in a poetic and enjoyable way and to introduce them to a space where they can contemplate the fantastic underwater world, but also reflect on the endangerment of this habitat and encourage change through a positive experience.
I had to come up with a concept that could be realised with minimal equipment and without a crew, as there was no budget to speak of. It turned out to be an advantage when I followed the artists. They were not actors who were used to having a whole team around them. The intimacy of working on my own allowed for moments of authenticity and helped us with the conversation that I recorded for the voiceover.
Travelling to the UK to meet the sound artists Chris Watson and Tony Myatt and to work with Theresa Baumgartner was extremely enjoyable. I had to relearn a lot of things myself, like sound mixing, sound recording and subtitling. Working as a one-man orchestra worked amazingly well for this documentary. I like getting my hands dirty and being involved in all aspects of the process, even though dirty hands wasn't really a accepted concept during the pandemic..
