Michael Krautter is a director of photography and director/dop.

When I was growing up, I was trained as a musician and thought, that was what I was going to do for a living. I was just following a form of artistic expression that resonated with me the most. But as soon as I discovered film, I knew it was what I wanted to do.

As a young dop I was lucky enough to work with some of the most renowned directors. Each time it had to be a film that stood out visually and conceptually. It certainly shouldn’t look like the rest. This school still characterizes me today.

Over the years, I have worked on numerous projects around the world, which have been repeatedly recognized with awards.

Today I also work as a director/dop.

I particularly enjoy working with real people, whether they are craftspeople, musicians, athletes or artists.  And be rewarded with a genuine and fascinating story that is both poetic and visually engaging.

Emotional Filmmaking

Emotions shape our lives. They influence our daily routines, often without us being aware of it. As a young musician, I knew I could play a note a dozen different ways and change the mood; as a filmmaker, I've switched instruments to achieve the same goal: emotion, atmosphere, whatever we call it. Every moment needs a touch of magic to create not only a visually stunning film, but to turn authenticity into a moving experience.

Having my own camera gear including some special lens sets allows me to develop and test out various techniques beforehand. it also helps me to be more flexible during the shoot and to realize personal projects, documentaries, music videos or art films.

There's nothing quite like that magical moment in the viewfinder - the moment you've been waiting for, sometimes beyond your  expectations. When all the effort, sweat and energy is visible as smiles on the faces of the team - priceless.

I like to get my hands dirty throughout the creative process, be flexible and plan meticulously to achieve compelling results. Regardless of the genre, my goal is always to keep the audience engaged until the very end. That's why I'm so involved in editing and sound design!

My films for brands such as Ferrari, Genesis, BMW, Maserati, german rail, Rolls Royce, Raiffeisen Bank, Hyundai, Samsung, Alfa Romeo and many others have been made in Europe, the USA and Asia, including China and South Korea.

For me, it is essential to meet challenges, no matter how big or small, with creative solutions. The earlier I am involved in the creative process, the more I can contribute with my expertise
